Wait... Won't oils make my skin oilier?

Wait… won’t oils make my face even oilier?

This is a question we have been asked time and time again, and boy is it a common misunderstanding that all oils make your skin oily and break out. This may be the case for some oils but trust us when we say that using the right oils on your skin will be the new holy grail in your skincare routine.

So how do you know which oils won’t make you break out? There is an index called the comedogenic index which rates oils based on how they clog your pores. Now you may be thinking, “comedo-what?!” but don’t worry it is fairly simple. Oils which have a higher rating (like coconut oil) clog your pores and cause breakouts, acne and blackheads. So it is safe to say that we want to avoid comedogenic oils and rather use non-comedogenic oils on our faces, as these oils will not cause blockages will hydrating and moisturising the skin (as well as providing many other benefits).

We only use non-comedogenic oils in our facial oils and we would love to break down each of these to help you understand more about what you are feeding your skin. Our Lavender and Lemongrass Range consist of two Facial Ranges, Dry Skin and Oily Skin, which we will discuss below (if you have combination skin, you will focus on the range which is associated with your T-zone):

Dry Skin

  • Almond Oil - reduces puffiness, improves overall skin tone, beautiful for dry skin, targets acne, lightens the appearance of scars and fine lines, reverses sun damage.

  • Macadamia Oil - closest oil to sebum, softens and moisturises dry skin, helps to balance oil levels, natural source of vitamin e, helps with healing scar lines, reduces inflammation.

  • Neem Oil - targets acne, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, evens skin tone, reduces inflammation and redness (dry skin conditions), stimulates collagen production, reduces pigmentation.

Oily Skin

  • Hemp Oil - balances out the skin’s oil production, soothes inflammation, anti-ageing properties

  • Grapeseed Oil - helps with breakouts, lightens scarring, collagen stimulation, reduces pigmentation, evens out skin tone, softens the skin, protection from sun damage

  • Neem Oil - targets acne, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, evens skin tone, reduces inflammation and redness (dry skin conditions), stimulates collagen production, reduces pigmentation.

The process of using oils on your skin

When you transition to using oils there is an adjustment period. It is slightly different for everyone but within this time you will start to notice positive changes in your skin and then suddenly you will have a breakout. At this point please don’t panic! This is a very good sign as the oils are pulling out bacteria and dirt from your deep within your skin and helping to balance out your oil levels. After this breakout your skin will start to heal from within and smooth out, ultimately creating a clearer complexion in the months to come.
